Coles Books has been an anchor in Brunswick Square for decades. The store, which is now part of the Chapters-Indigo chain, announced via Facebook on Tuesday that it will be shutting its doors for good on July 3.
The store is closing a little over a year into the pandemic, so the store would have suffered from lost foot traffic in the mall. The mall itself has also lost many tenants in recent years, many pre-pandemic, so it’s not clear why it closed now. Coles is directing all questions to Indigo at this time, and they haven’t as yet responded to Huddle’s request for an interview.
There is still one Coles location in McAllister Place and a large Indigo box store at East Point Shopping.
Comments on Facebook and Twitter show how customers in the area will miss their city centre bookstore.
“Always came here to buy books and other things as it is closer to me and more convenient for me than hopping on a bus and going east to Indigo or Coles in the mall,” wrote one customer. “I am super disappointed they are closing.”

Coles is currently holding a closing sale for 25 percent off in lifestyle, paper, games and toys and 50 percent off bargain books. The sale will go until its last day on July 3.
