The incoming mayor on Campobello Island is a fisherman and volunteer firefighter.
Harvey Matthews is a first-time politician who decided to run because he didn’t like how things were being run.
Matthews said Campobello Island needs reliable internet service.
“They just ran Fibre Op lines from the American side halfway across our island to service Grand Manan. I am very eager to get this company some funding so we can be added to that grid,” Matthews said.
Matthews said he didn’t do a lot of campaigning.
“I figured there are enough people here that knew me and what I stood for so I didn’t have to preach to them every day about it,” Matthews said.
Matthews will be working with a group of people who are also new to politics.
Alex Carroll, Kyle Fletcher, Elizabeth Butler, and Dianna Parker will join Matthews on Campobello Island council.
He considers improved internet quality, support for tourism, and recreation options for kids and seniors as challenges facing the community.
