Canopy Growth announced the closure of the Fredericton facility, Tweed Fredericton, along with the ceasing of operations in St. John’s.
According to Jordan Sinclair, Canopy Growth’s Vice President of Communications, the closure of the Fredericton facility impacts 63 employees and 14 employees in St. John’s.
“Canopy Growth has made the strategic decision to close a number of its production facilities and can confirm that its site in Fredericton will be closing as a result of the larger restructuring efforts outlined by the company earlier this year,” said Sinclair.
“These decisions are never easy and we thank the employees affected for the contributions they made to Canopy Growth.”
Along with these closures, Canopy Growth will be ceasing operations at sites in Edmonton, Alberta; Bowmanville, Ontario; as well as their outdoor grow operations in Saskatchewan.
220 employees have been affected as a result of all closures.
The decision was made in part due to a strategic business review that began earlier in 2020.
Canopy Growth opened its Fredericton cannabis production facility in March 2019.
At the time, they expected to cultivate more than 5,000 kg of cannabis per year at the $40-million facility.
The facility in St. John’s was still under construction but was expected to employ up to 145 full-time workers.
The government of Newfoundland and Labrador had committed up to $40-million to offset construction costs for the facility.
Canopy Growth says money that went to the company through the deal will be returned.
