Non-residents and ‘thrill-seekers’ could now face fines if their actions require Saint John’s fire services to respond.
Council passed a bylaw enacting a number of fines for when fire services are called at Monday night’s meeting.
Non-residents can now be fined for being involved in motor vehicle accidents requiring a response from fire services.
The city can also now charge fines for ‘thrill-seeking activities,’ which was previously described to council as situations where the fire department is called to areas like Partridge Island for reckless behaviour.
Businesses will also want to ensure their fire protection alarms and systems are well-maintained, as a nuisance alarm or malfunctioning system could also lead to fines.
Those found guilty of the new offences can be charged between $1,000 and $2,100.
