A building on City Road which used to be home to a lounge and bakery will soon meet the wrecking ball.
Saint John council has approved the demolition of the former BJ’s Lounge and City Road Bakery.
A city staff report says the dilapidated two-storey building has been vacant since at least February of 2018.
“The building is a hazard to the safety of the public by reason of being vacant, by reason of dilapidation and by reason of unsoundness of structural strength,” said the report.
Photos show debris throughout the building and papers strewn all over an office. The ceiling has also collapsed in several places.
A Notice to Comply was issued on March 13 and a compliance inspection conducted on July 24 found no improvements had been made, said the report.
Bylaw enforcement officer Benn Purinton said they have been unable to contact the registered owner and suspect the property has been abandoned.
Purinton said about $60,000 in outstanding taxes are owed on the property, which is assessed at $204,000.
City staff say it will take about four to five weeks to demolish the building once a tender is awarded.
