The premier and public safety minister fielded questions about the death of Chantel Moore in the provincial legislature on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old Indigenous woman from B.C. was shot and killed last week during a wellness check by Edmundston police.
Opposition house leader Denis Landry asked Premier Blaine Higgs what the government is doing to ensure the investigation is independent.
Higgs said Quebec’s Serious Incident Response Team is examining what happened.
“We have used Nova Scotia in the past and in this situation they were not available and the Quebec investigation folks were and that is now happening. I am obviously looking for answers there as well and answers that we can all understand how we can do better in the future,” Higgs said.
Green Party leader David Coon said Moore’s family needs to know exactly what happened and requested a preliminary report on the incident by the end of June.
“It’s unacceptable and cruel for the family to have to wait for a final report from Quebec’s Serious Incident Response Team which is accountable to Quebec,” Coon said.
Public Safety Minister Carl Urquhart said everything will be investigated, noting you can’t release a lot of information until you know what the story is.
Coon later called on Urquhart and the provincial government to have a New Brunswick SIRT team in place by September.
Urquhart said that “won’t be happening” but instead suggested a Maritime or Atlantic version of police oversight may be a good idea.
