Municipalities across Canada are getting a bit of a financial boost to help them through the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the federal government will fast-track $2.2 billion in funding through the Gas Tax Fund.
“From testing clinics to program for seniors, cities and towns provide essential services so it’s crucial that they have the resources they need,” said Trudeau.
The Gas Tax Fund for 2020-21, which is normally delivered in two instalments, will be paid out immediately, he said.
Letters have been sent to provinces and territories to outline how the accelerated process will work.
“This is a start. We know there’s more to be done to support municipalities and to support the entire reopening process,” said Trudeau.
Trudeau said the Liberal government will keep working with provinces and territories to find more ways to support municipalities, among other things.
