The New Brunswick NDP has postponed its June leadership and policy convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Cyprien Okana said the decision was made in order to prevent a last-minute cancellation and schedule change.
“Although we were on target to complete the necessary vetting processes on each of the candidates, we will now have additional time for that process,” said Okana in a statement.
The party said it also recognized many members might not be ready for a June convention, even if the crisis abates.
“We recognize the burden and stress the state of emergency places on all New Brunswickers, particularly workers in essential services, health care, and food supply industries,” said Okana. “We want to give the opportunity for everyone to decompress, and begin to resume their normal lives without adding any additional stresses.”
The party’s chief electoral officer will contact the potential candidates to ensure their continued interest in staying in the leadership race.
