Veteran Saint John journalist Graham Brown died on Wednesday following a long illness.
The 71-year-old moved to Saint John in the late 1980s where, over the years, he worked for Acadia Broadcasting, Maritime Broadcasting and former Rogers station News 88.9, among others.
Brian McLain, former news director of CHSJ News, said they first met while covering a trial when working for competing news organizations.
McLain remembers Brown had to leave the trial early and get back to the radio station.
“I was under no time constraints, so I stayed. I phoned him up and told him what happened after he left and he was quite surprised that someone from a rival station would do that,” McLain said.
Brown hailed from Sydney, Nova Scotia, where McLain said he started his career working in print journalism.
“He switched over to radio because he had a great voice. He not only had a great on-air presence, but he was a great reporter,” McLain said.
McLain describes Brown as a newshound with an ironic sense of humour.
“Well, Graham was quite eccentric actually. He loved pens, he loved to collect pens. He loved to collect model cars. He loved to collect hats. He has about 60 hats. Of course, books. He could stack a whole library with the books he has,” McLain said.
McLain said Brown was still doing his John Wayne impressions in palliative care before his death.
Brown was diagnosed with cancer six years ago.
