A resident in Saint John’s Ward 3 is raising concerns about alternate-side parking.
Kristen Savoie posted in a Facebook group tagging Saint John Mayor Don Darling to express her concerns.
Residents must now park their vehicles on one side of the street during the first 15 days of the month before moving to the other side for the rest of the month.
“It doesn’t really work because the side of the streets that we’re supposed to park on for 15 consecutive days doesn’t get plowed properly because there are always cars on it,” she said.
Savoie said when the plows don’t have that access to both sides of the road, all the snow turns into a massive pile of ice.
“It’s impossible to drive over that. If you’re going to drive over that, you’d be tearing the side skirts off your cars or getting scratches on your rocker panels and things like that,” she said.
Savoie said there’s a lot of people who share her views and she didn’t think the city would take one person’s complaint seriously, which is why she went to Facebook.
She said the previous solution was more resident-friendly because the parking side changed every day, adding that residential areas already have problems with a shortage of available parking.
“I just think it’s becoming more of an issue,” Savoie said.
“We just have to worry about it more.”
Savoie said there has been some negativity towards her post, but other people have agreed with her about the parking.
She said her ward councillor, David Hickey, has also reached out to her after seeing her post to discuss her concerns.
“I am feeling optimistic, maybe hopeful is the better word for it, it’s just something that affects me every single day and I would have felt silly if I just sat around and let it happen,” Savoie said.
