The former MP for New Brunswick Southwest is looking to run in the upcoming provincial byelection in Saint Croix.
Karen Ludwig says she will be seeking the Liberal nomination for the southwestern New Brunswick riding.
The seat has been empty since September when long-time MLA Greg Thompson passed away.
Ludwig says since then, Charlotte County has struggled without proper representation.
“There is an opportunity to grow and we need representation to support that,” said Ludwig. “That’s really critical that every riding is represented. When we look at rural and coastal ridings, we’re just as important as the urban centres.”
As a former Member of Parliament, Ludwig says she has the community’s best interest at heart.
Ludwig says she also wants to see the province grow and thrive.
“I don’t want to be known with the tag of the poorest province in Canada. We have opportunities here to be known as a province to invest in, a province to grow in, a province to thrive in, and that’s the vision that I look forward to in New Brunswick,” she said.
Ludwig says one of the top priorities for the rural riding is improved access to health care.
“When we look at health care services and nursing homes, those need to be strengthened and supported. I feel very strongly about that. We are an aging population in New Brunswick. We have high rates of diabetes and obesity,” she said.
The People’s Alliance has already named Rod Cumberland as their candidate for the byelection.
Premier Blaine Higgs has said he will announce the date for the byelection in March.
