One of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most well-known politicians has passed away.
John Crosbie died Friday at the age of 88.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball expressed his condolences to the Crosbie family, saying “we are a better, stronger province because of the energy and commitment of Mr. Crosbie.”
Crosbie had a long history in politics starting at the municipal level before becoming an MLA and then served as a Member of Parliament for St. John’s West from 1976 to 1993.
He was Minister of Fisheries and Oceans under Brian Mulroney from 1991 to 1993 and oversaw the decision to close the Atlantic Canadian cod fishery due to the collapse of cod stocks.
