The Office of the Official Opposition has confirmed that Kevin Vickers plans to run in a byelection in the riding of Shediac Bay-Dieppe.
The Liberal leader previously indicated he would wait until the next provincial election.
Former premier and MLA Brian Gallant had represented Shediac Bay-Dieppe since 2014 but officially stepped down and left politics earlier this fall.
Vickers, who is from Miramichi and doesn’t live in the riding, was acclaimed as Liberal leader in April after a second candidate dropped out of the race.
The former RCMP officer had served a four-year term as Canada’s ambassador to Ireland and was a Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Commons.
A byelection must be called by next spring.
