The town of McAdam’s plan to grow its population has been a huge success, says its Mayor.
Ken Stannix says they had 600 applicants for the $1 lots they put on the market earlier this year.
After working their way down the list, there are now 10 lots sold and six spoken for and awaiting legal documents.
He says he’s excited to welcome them all to McAdam.
“The deeper we get down into the list what we’re finding is people actually took the time to look and see what McAdam was all about, where it was, what the transfer entailed, those kinds of things, so they have a better feel for what they wanted,” he said.
He expects to see building start later in the fall. Some owners have even bought pre-fabricated homes to assemble
According to Stannix, there are people coming from all over Canada, and the world.
“We do have one person that is coming in from Hong Kong, a couple from the islands down in the Carribean, and then there was a number of them from Ontario. Really they’re from all over Canada. We had one come in from Nova Scotia, but not too many from New Brunswick,” he said.
Stannix says the response was overwhelming, with hundreds of people calling to get their name on the list when they first put the lots on the market.
“One of the things that I enjoy the most is folks that are coming here, when I talk to them if they’re not young retirees, they’re younger, and they have energy and they have ideas and that is the most important thing they bring to the community,” he said.
He says it was a steep learning curve to handle all the calls and curious people, but they’ve got a handle on it now, and even hope to expand the project.
There is another street in McAdam he wants to open up that would be home to about 20 lots they could sell.
“This has already been so successful,” he said. “It’s setting the stage for a lot more growth in the village.”
Stannix in the next four years, they will be able to grow the population of McAdam from 1,150 people to 1,350.
