Scorching temps are very dangerous for your furry companion.
Shelter manager Joan Richardson of the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue says this time of year it’s a good idea to change the time you walk your dog.
“So you want to go early morning before the sun is at its highest and it’s hot and later in the evening when it’s cooler,” Richardson said.
At the shelter, she says they use kiddie pools to keep the dogs cool.
“Or just the hose and a sprinkler, just connect to the hose and let them run through it. Spray bottles are great as well but, if you think your dog is too hot, we certainly recommend a cold facecloth.” Richardson said.
One of the other dangers that come with hot weather is that dogs and cats can get a sunburn.
“We had a cat come in a few weeks ago, an all-white cat. The tips of her ears were very crusty and she had been sunburned.” Richardson said.
She says it’s best on a hot day to leave your dog at home.
