The Saint John Campus of NBCC will play host to 20 post-secondary provincial competitions for the 2019 Skills Canada NB competition this Friday.
Students and apprentices will be vying for a position on Team NB, which will compete at the 25th Skills Canada National Competition in Halifax next month.
“NBCC has built a strong reputation as a leading provider of skills training in New Brunswick, and we’re looking forward to showcasing our facilities and programming along with the incredible skills of New Brunswick’s trades students and apprentices,” said Catherine Black, NBCC Dean of Trades and Hospitality in a release.
“By opening our doors to students from secondary schools and the public, we’re giving the next generation of learners the opportunity to see what an education in the skilled trades can provide.”
Competitions are open to the public and to schools in the region from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those attending can also try their hands at the many Try-a-Trade activities on site.
Skills Canada NB reaches hundreds of New Brunswick youth each year through school programs and presentations, as well as the Trades & Tech Career Exploration for Girls and its signature event, the New Brunswick Skills Competition.
Through these initiatives and partnerships with NBCC, CCNB, UNIFOR and the New Brunswick Building Trades Unions, Skills Canada NB has been successful in changing perceptions and encouraging more people to enter trade and technology sectors as a career.
