Working with Saint John Police K9 officer Diesel is a dream come true for Constable Peter Haslett.
He calls it the most sought after job in policing and something he always wanted to do in his career.
Haslett and his partner Diesel are now award-winning after recently being honoured for helping the RCMP on a case involving theft.
SJPF is pleased to announce Cst. Haslett and PSD Diesel received the United States Police Canine Association 2018 Case of the Fourth Quater – Patrol Excellence Award for their involvement in an incident which occured within RCMP jurisdiction on November 12, 2018. He tells CHSJ News they responded to an area near St. Martin’s area about 3 a.m. last November 12th where Diesel tracked the scent of two people who fled into the woods and before long they found weapons.
“We thought we saw some flashlights so we stood their quietly. All of a sudden he turned and went up about the way we came in about 100 feet and turned left into the woods and found two guys hiding in the brush.”
We asked him if he falls a lot.
“A lot of the time you are running and stumbling. We don’t use flashlights much at nighttime so they don’t give away their location.
I’m running and stumbling and I have a 93-pound dog pulling me as hard as he can possibly pull me.”
Haslett says he’s just a chauffeur adding if Diesel could do a report and drive a car, he’d be out a job.
Saint John has another K9 team with Constable Geoff MacDonald and his partner Axel.
Saint John Police Chief Bruce Connell recently awarded Constable Haslett and Diesel with the 2018 Patrol Excellence Award from the United States Police Canine Association.
