Brian Gallant has announced he will officially resign as Opposition leader at the next Liberal caucus meeting to pave the way for an interim leader.
Although supporters have encouraged him to run again, Gallant said it is time for the party to move on and select a new leader.
“Since Premier [Blaine] Higgs is governing like he has a majority government and is planning to continue to cut in education and health care, I now think it is quite possible that his government could fall over his upcoming budget,” Gallant said during an announcement in Moncton on Friday.
Gallant will stay on as MLA for Shediac Bay-Dieppe “for now” but he does not plan to remain for the next four years if that is how long the Higgs government may last.
He said he ultimately plans to exit political life and looks forward to future opportunities but he did not elaborate.
