Swift action on AIM from the new Conservative government.
The Department of Environment and Local Government ordering American Iron and Metal to shut down all operations following a series of explosions in recent weeks.
Environment Minister Jeff Carr says the order required the immediate shutdown has been delivered adding they are deeply concerned about ongoing environmental issues at the site.
“It is important that companies work with us while respecting their neighbours and the environment,” said Carr.
In addition to the shutdown, the order requires AIM to submit a plan to eliminate explosions and the impact of excessive noise and vibration within 60 operational days.
The order will remain in effect until further notice.
Before word the province ordered a shutdown at AIM, we spoke with Raven Blue of Livable Saint John about a meeting held last night in Saint John regarding the metal shredding facility and its impacts.
Blue says his group is more concerned about air quality after repeated explosions.
“We’re getting on to about 8 years now where people living in the area have not really seen any consequence for AIM. People have shared their views that it’s continued long enough.”
Blue says some folks with respiratory issues say it’s worse now because of dust from the AIM facility.
