With support from the village of Riverside-Albert, the Nature Conservancy of Canada wants to conserve a piece of private property which contains the community water supply.
Nature Conservancy spokesperson Denise Roy says the land consists of 326-acres of old Acadian forest with two reservoirs and the “water lease” with the private owner expires in 2019.
“We are hoping to be able to raise the funds to conserve not only the forest but also to ensure the drinking water for the neighbouring village,” she notes.
Roy says about $250,000 needs to be raised to complete the purchase of the land located between the Caledonia Gorge Provincial Protected Area and the village of Riverside-Albert.
Mayor Jim Campbell has even made a personal donation noting how important the conservation project is to the community.
