The federal government will be expanding the ENERGY STAR Program to include industry.
Minister of Natural Resources Jim Carr announced the expansion of the program that will see Canadian industry contribute more to the overall goal of becoming a low-carbon and clean growth economy.
Carr says it’s a logical first step as the world makes the transition to a low carbon future.
The industrial sector is the most energy intensive of our economy producing more than one-third of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Energy performance indicators in the steel sector will be used to measure its gains against the steel industry’s average across the country and the United States.
The top performing steel facilities will be Energy Star certified, which will let customers know they are serious about making a real difference for the environment.
Carr says studies show that ENERGY STAR has helped some industrial facilities reduce its energy intensity by five percent over a five year period.
He says the program will be rolled out to other industries in the near future.
The announcement was made at the Algonquin Resort in St. Andrews.
