A new mural has been unveiled on Water Street depicting the Marco Polo ship and Saint John in 1851, before the devastating Great Fire.
This 12 by 20 foot piece of public art was commissioned by Irving Oil and was created by artist Geoff Slater of St. Andrew’s who is the artist-in-residence at Kingsbrae Gardens.
“It’s actually got some interesting history in it because it’s got some pre-fire geography that some research had to be done to figure out what Saint John looked like at the time when the Marco Polo would have been in the harbour,” says Kevin Scott of Irving Oil.
Irving Oil has also commissioned another piece of public art this year at their St. Stephen location which will be a right whale sculpture.
