The next time you’re strolling through the Saint John City Market take a look up and you’ll see 520 handpainted balloons hanging from the rafters.
This is the fourth year of Mobiles in the Market and this year’s theme is Up and Away. Over 1800 schoolkids took part in this project.
Community Engagement Coordinator with the Anglophone South School District Erica Lane says a huge piece of this is the artwork but another major component is the fact that the pieces are auctioned off near the end of the year to support the Harbour Lights Campaign.
“So it’s a very simple way for our students to be able to give back.”
Lane says many of their schools take this on as graded pieces of art.
“So the students are actually graded for their work so this is part of their schoolwork it’s incorporated right into the curriculum. The other really neat thing that happens one of our schools actually uses it for an art show as a fundraiser at the end of their school year.”
