A major fire along Prince Edward Street destroying a three storey building that houses the Loyalist City Pawn Shop and an adjacent building will have to come down as well because of fire damage.
Fire Chief Kevin Clifford says the Prince Edward Square apartment building had to be evacuated and the people who live there will not be able to return until the heat can come back on. That could take a while because the buildup of water compromised the electrical system and repairs will have to be made.
The people who live there were taken to hospital, are staying with friends or relatives with some being accomodated at the Boys and Girls Club where 40 cots were set up by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
With another blizzard watch issued for Saint John, the city’s only option is to push the snow back so drivers can make their way along streets. Kevin Rice is the Deputy Commissioner of Transportation and Environment Services for the city and he’s hoping actual snow removal will start on Wednesday.
Resources had to be diverted to clean up the mess along Prince Edward Street after the fire which began around 2:30 Sunday morning.
