In the Majors, the New York Yankees fell 4 and a half games behind the idle Boston Red Sox in the American League East after being shut out by the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0. Marco Estrada and two relievers combined on a six hitter while Jose Bautista hit a solo home run.

In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals are now just one game behind the Chicago Cubs in the Central Division after former Cub Derek Fowler hit a grand slam homer in an 8-6 win over Kansas City. The Cardinals have won six in a row. In other play, it was the Los Angeles Angels 6 Seattle 3.....Baltimore 7 Oakland 2.....Los Angeles Dodgers 8 Arizona 6......Minnesota 7 Milwaukee 2....Chicago White Sox 3 Houston 2.....Tampa Bay 4 Cleveland 1.....NY Mets 10 Philadelphia 0....Washington 3 Miami 2.....Pittsburgh 7 Detroit 5 and Cincinnati 10 San Diego 3.

At the Canada Summer Games, in golf, Team New Brunswick is in third place and in line for a medal going into the final round. In the individual competition, Calvin Ross of Fredericton, who just won the Canadian Junior title, is second, three shots behind. In women's volleyball, New Brunswick downed Nova Scotia to advance to the semifinals against Alberta.

At the Ball Hockey Championships taking place this week in Saint John at Harbour Station and the LBR, the Ladies Team New Brunswick shut out Manitoba 3-0 to advance to the semifinals. Randi Stewart was named player of the game.

In the Canadian Football League, Quarterback Mike Reilly passed for 384 yards with two touchdowns as the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Ottawa Redblacks 27-20 to remain undefeated.

In the third round of the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Montreal, unheralded Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov  upset Rafael Nadal of Spain. At 18, Shapovalev becomes the youngest player to reach the Round of 16 of a Master Series tournament since Nadal, himself, did it in 2004.
