7 months after calling for a "new deal" for Saint John, Mayor Don Darling wish has been granted by the provincial government.

At a media event at City hall, Premier Brian Gallant said New Brunswick's economy needs a strong Saint John and to that end the province will put a variety of measures in place.

They include investing $270 million in infrastructure projects and working to grow the population by promoting the free tuition program and the youth employment fund with a special focus on Saint John.

A working committee made up of government and city officials will be created to check the success of the various measures with the goal being to elimiate Saint John's structural deficit through growth as quickly as possible.

Until that happens, the government will provide 22.8 million over three years until the deficit is eliminated.
