The 40 days of Lent begin tomorrow with Ash Wednesday.
Bishop Robert Harris of Saint John says it's a period of preparation for Easter.
Harris says the Lenten season has a two fold purpose for new and existing Catholics.
He says Lent is a time of intense preparation for those who want to become Catholic and get baptized.
The other purpose is for existing Catholics to renew their baptismal promises leading up to Easter.
Harris says some people will go to mass every single day during Lent.
Many parishes offer several Ash Wednesday services and also have daily masses throughout Lent.
Easter Sunday is on April 16th.
