Dennis Oland’s lawyers want the New Brunswick Police Commission to resume its investigation into the Saint John Police Force’s handling of the Richard Oland murder.
Alan Gold says the inquiry was put on hold to allegedly avoid any possible impact on the jury trial.
But Gold says since the trial will now be heard by a judge alone, there’s no reason why the investigation can’t resume.
“The New Brunswick Police Commission has many issues to examine about how this case was investigated and how the police decided Dennis was the perpetrator of the crime within hours of the murder being discovered,” stated Gold.
Meantime, the board of Saint John Police Commissioners released a statement regarding the mistrial.
It says it plans to review the court’s statement to understand and learn from it adding the board and the chief take these matters very seriously.
The commission will be asking the New Brunswick Police Commission to do an independent review on this matter.
