There’s a sea of possibilities out there when it comes to repurposing old shipping containers and Discover Saint John wants to see your vision.
A design competition to upcycle shipping containers has been launched for Canada 150 and you’re invited to send in your concept.
Submissions are now open and you have to incorporate one of three themes in your design: Canada heritage, community impact or the future of Canada.
Five finalists will actually bring their visions to fruition to be featured at the Area 506 festival.
“Where the community can then participate in voting and say what is their favourite and then that will become a legacy for the city,” says Discover Saint John Executive Director Victoria Clarke, “so we’ll have one that we’ll completely preserve and we’ll have the other four that will actual await maybe further repurposement throughout the city.”
Clarke says thousands of shipping containers go through our port every year.
“Heritage Canada along with many others see that the shipping container life can live beyond just its purpose as being a container to bring goods across the ocean,” she says.
Canadian Heritage has pledged $150,000 to the design competition and the culture stage as well.
